Meeting tonight! See you there...

Yes, I know it's the 3rd Wednesday of the month and yes, I know that we decided to have our meetings on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month and yes, I know that means something must be up and you're right - something is definitely up.  And although it pains me greatly to do things out of order, I've been instructed to say this:

Instead of having our regularly scheduled meeting next week, November 24th, which is the day before Thanksgiving, Captain Bob has decided that it would be better to HAVE A MEETING TONIGHT, November 17th at 6:30 p.m. at the Jerome Senior Center, 520 N. Lincoln in Jerome.

I don't know what's on Captain Bob's agenda but I can tell you that we will probably talk about Youth Appreciation where we honored 142 kids for being outstanding youth in the Jerome Community.  It was an amazing night - we wish everyone could have been there to see all the kids, parents, grandparents, teachers and community leaders gathered together to honor these wonderful kids.  Wow - it still takes my breath away.

I also can tell you that we'll talk about our upcoming event, Breakfast with Santa, that will be held Saturday, December 18, 2010 at St. Jerome's Catholic Parish Hall in Jerome.  Breakfast will be served from 7:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. so Optimists will need to be there around 5:30 a.m. (or as I like to call it o'dark thirty) to begin the festivities which include, but are not limited to, setting-up, decorating, cooking, waitressing, waitering (is that a word?), baking, candlestick making, entertaining, singing, dancing, laughing, jumping, climbing, etc.  If you can do one, or all of these things, whether individually or at the same time, WE NEED YOU!  And really, this is one of our favorite events so if you're in the area, please come by and lend a hand.  And, if you're not in the area, send us a text to let us know you're thinking of us.  Oh, and pray for SNOW!!

That's all for now.  If I've forgotten anything, I'm sure Captain Bob will tell me, to which I'll respond....HEY, I'm just a volunteer!

Happy Wednesday!

Yes, we know it is the third Wednesday, but...

See you tonight!

Hola!

Tonight's regularly scheduled meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Jerome Senior Center in Jerome which will be the "official" first meeting (Bob's now officially sworn in) with "Captain Bob" Helms at the...ah...er, helm.  Tonight we'll be discussing....

1st Quarter District Conference  was in Poulsbo, WA last weekend.  I don't have a report to report so whoever is reading this can report if they have anything to report.  :)

Youth Appreciation - Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. at Summit Elementary in Jerome.  We are looking for the awesome kids in our community in order to honor them and nominations are flooding in everyday!  We're very excited to have the Jerome Rotary as our co-sponsors of this wonderful event as well as our very special guest, Capt. Rob Storm from the Idaho State Police who will be presenting the kids with their certificates along with Jerome County Magistrate Judge, and Optimist, Tom Borresen.  As we've done in years past, we're not necessarily looking for the straight A students or athletes - we're looking for the kids who stand out and make a difference just by being them.  We've never failed to be impressed by the youth in our community so if you need a little revival in your heart about "kids today", please come to our ceremony.  You won't be disappointed.  Chair is Sheri Mitchell so if you have any questions, please contact Sheri.

Coats for Kids - The new school year is in full swing and colder temps are here.  We do not have a chair for this project so at this point, it will be a group effort for Coats for Kids.  Sheri Mitchell has agreed to be the ringleader until a suitable replacement has been located.  If you're interested in chairing Coats for Kids, please let Capt. Bob or Sheri know ASAP.

Breakfast with Santa - Saturday, December 18, 2010 at St. Jerome's Catholic Parish Hall.  We are excited to announce that we will get the use the new Parish Hall for Breakfast so we'll have more room for everyone...and the heater should work, too!  Chair is Lori Tangen.  Workers should be at the hall around 5:30-ish (or o'dark thirty) to begin setting up, decorating the tables, setting up the Christmas tree and warming up the grills.  Breakfast will be served from 7:00-11:00 a.m. so mark your calendars.  This is a FUN event!

That's all for now, I think.  Our next regularly scheduled meeting will be replaced by Youth Appreciation on Wednesday, November 10th, at 6:00 p.m. at Summit Elementary in Jerome so please note the new time and new location for next week's meeting ONLY.  Stay tuned for additional information for the meeting schedule for the remainder of 2010.

Happy Wednesday!

I'm still waiting on information about whether or not we will be doing a Monte Carlo night for the Jerome County Christmas Party.  Stay tuned...

That's all for now.  Have a fabulous day!

Installation banquet to be held October 16

Good evening my friends!

It's that time of year - time to install the NEW President, Secretary/Treasurer and Board members for the Jerome Optimist Club for the 2010-2011 year!!

I am sending this to EVERYONE I have on my e-mail list.  For those of you out of the general vicinity of Jerome, I understand if you won't be able to be there.  If you can't RSVP, I'll be very understanding! :)  However, for those of you on this e-mail list who (a) live in Jerome or Twin Falls and (b) are a member of either the Jerome or Twin Falls Clubs - or both - PLEASE, if at all possible, let me know if you'll be able to make it to the banquet.  I need a head count by Wednesday as well as your dinner selection.  It would be very much appreciated!

Have a great evening!

REMINDER -

Yes, we have a meeting tonight!!  Please join us at 6:30 p.m. at the Jerome Senior Center, 520 N. Lincoln, for our end-of-June meeting.  We will be joined by our guest speaker, Riley Parrish, who will be discussing his senior project, paving the basketball court at Forsyth Park, for the 2010-2011 year.  We'll also discuss my recent trip to Las Vegas and the fact that I didn't come home with another tattoo nor did I win any money.  Bummer.

GOLF!!  - Please join us for our annual Bud Gorton Memorial Golf Tournament to be held Saturday, July 24, 2010, at 93 Golf Ranch in Jerome.  Shotgun start at 9:00 a.m., cost is $50 per person (includes a cart).  Lunch is on your own but fancy gift bags will be provided to each player.  Contact Julie Stadelman (308-2750) with your team members or, if you don't have a team, we can assign you to one.  (My team needs a 4th member, incidentally, so if you can golf better than the average blond, you're in!  Let me know if you're interested.)  Not a golfer?  You can sponsor a hole.  1/4 hole - $25; 1/2 hole - $50; 1 hole - $100.  By sponsoring a hole, you'll be helping the Jerome Optimist Club continue to sponsor events and projects for the youth of the Jerome community and seriously, what a great way to spend the day!  Any questions?  Contact Julie (308-2750) or myself (308-7995) for more information.

4TH QUARTER DISTRICT CONVENTION - August 19-21, 2010 - at the Shilo Inn, Richland, WA.  Make your hotel reservations at (509) 946-4661. Rates: $69 to $125 depending on room choice.  If you're a Jerome member and are interested in attending, contact S/T Julie Stadelman.

NEXT MEETING:  Wednesday, July 14, 2010.

Until then....

Happy Wednesday!

No meeting on June 23

I know, I know, I'm a couple of days early....must be the sunshine!

Reminder, we are NOT having a meeting this week due to the absence of the President - me.  I'll be in Las Vegas sitting by the pool while drinking water and plotting my revenge against the penny machine that took my $2.00.  (I'm a big gambler, can you tell?)

Our next meeting will be Wednesday, June 30th at 6:30 p.m. at the Jerome Senior Center.  Our guest speaker will be Riley Parrish who will be discussing his senior project.

Until then....Happy Summer!

Meeting tonight - June 16

Yes, we have a meeting tonight.  Bob Helms will be at the....er, helm of the meeting this evening.  Not sure what he has planned but I guess you won't know until you show up.

I can tell you one thing that we will be discussing and that is our next event, the Bud Gorton Memorial Golf Tournament scheduled for Saturday, July 24th.  Julie Stadelman is the chair of this event so I'll rely on Julie for the specifics i.e. tee time, cost, hole sponsors, etc.

Also, remember we're on our Summer Meeting Schedule.  Our next meeting will be Wednesday, June 30th.  I might even have a guest speaker that night. Stay tuned.  (Oh, and in case you care, I'll be in Las Vegas next Wednesday celebrating my recent departure from my 30s to my 40s!)

Until then...

Happy Wednesday!!

Jerome Optimist Club June Preview

Greetings!

Tonight we have a ***GUEST SPEAKER*** so everyone who can attend should attend (please!!)

We'll be welcoming Melissa Pease-Hillarides of Southern Idaho Tourism to talk about touring beautiful (but recently soaked) southern Idaho. In addition, Melissa will be talking about Savor Southern Idaho, a celebration of all-things Idaho, that will be held at Canyon Crest Dining and Event Center on Thursday, June 17th.  For more information, come to the meeting tonight!

PAST EVENTS:

Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who came out for Senior Lock-in on May 27th.  I have to say that in all my years of participating in this event, this was the first time that we couldn't get the kids to stop playing.  We had 8 Blackjack tables and 2 Texas Hold'em tables going at the same time and it didn't stop.  In fact, since it was a work night and I had only committed us to be there from 9:30 - 11:30 p.m., we finally had to "just say no" and pack it in.  Of course, it was nearly 1:00 a.m. when that happened!  It was a late night for us, that's for sure, but a fun night.  And, I heard that the kids continued to play Blackjack for the rest of the night so our tables were well used.  Anyway, thanks again to everyone who helped deal, set-up, tear down, etc.  You guys are the BEST!!

UPCOMING EVENTS:

Jerome Optimist Annual Bud Gorton Memorial Golf Tournament - Saturday, July 24, 2010, at 93 Golf Ranch in Jerome.  Shotgun start at at 9:00 a.m. for 4-person teams.  More information to follow such as cost, prizes, etc.  Chairwoman extraordinaire is, of course, Julie Stadelman.  Thanks Julie!!  Also, if you're not a golfer, maybe you'd consider sponsoring a hole.  It's a great way to donate to the cause without having to hit a tiny, white ball around a golf course in 100-degree weather.  :)  If you're interested in being a hole sponsor, let me know.

SUMMER MEETING SCHEDULE:

It's June, it's nearly summer time - at least the calendar says it is - so I'm going back to my summer meeting schedule:

June 2 - Meeting
June 9 - NO MEETING - (It's my 40th birthday!!)
June 16 - Meeting
June 23 - NO MEETING (I'll be in Vegas, baby, celebrating the aforementioned 40th....)
June 30 - Meeting

Even though we're not meeting each week, I'll continue to send out reminders to everyone and maybe, just maybe, there will be a suprise BBQ thrown in there somewhere.  And maybe, just maybe, our current Lt. Governor Brent Evans will surprise us with a summer zone meeting!!  Brent???  Oh, and by the way, congratulations to our new Lt. Governor for the 2010-2011 year, Donald Bohrn.  Thanks, Don!  For those of you out there who are past presidents of Zone 9, remember, you too can be a Lt. Governor.  Just tell us that you're interested and you'll be in like Flynn.

Happy Wednesday!

Breakfast with Santa - Merry Christmas!

Good morning!

Yes, we're having a meeting tonight - 6:30 p.m. at the Jerome Senior Center in Jerome - but I'm not sure what is on the agenda.  I'm still waiting for a Vice President-type or Secretary/Treasurer-type person to contact me to tell me what's going on.  (Sheri?  Julie?)  But, until then, I'm making it up as I go along:

Breakfast with Santa is set for this Saturday, December 18th at St. Jerome's Parish Hall in Jerome.  Breakfast will be served from 7:00-11:00 a.m. but Optimists need to be there between 5:30 and 6:00 a.m. (yes, in the morning) to help set-up and decorate which activities will then morph into serving, cooking, cleaning, entertaining, laughing, talking, drinking coffee, more cooking, more cleaning, mixing, ladling, flipping, tossing, turning and finally, ending.  A good time will be had by all, I'm certain of that!

Pre-Breakfast with Santa  will be on Friday evening at St. Jerome's where we'll unload all the foodstuffs for the next day's extravaganza.  I don't know what time we're meeting - need confirmation from Chair Lori Tangen - but I'll let you know ASAP.  If you're available on Friday evening to help, we'll take all the help we can get.  Between moving food from Harvey's truck to the church and then loading and unloading all the Breakfast with Santa stuff from the storage unit i.e. my garage, helping hands are very....well, helpful.  Stay tuned for more information.

Update on Captain Bob - I sent out an e-mail yesterday with Bob's specifics as to how to make contact with him at the VA Hospital in Boise.  If you need that information again, please let me know.  And Bob, if you're reading this, please know that you're still in our thoughts and prayers!  Kudos on the excellent progress! :)

End-of-year meeting schedule - No more meetings for 2010!  I'll advise of the 2011 meeting schedule when we have it figured out.  Until then...

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from the Jerome Optimist Club!!

Happy Wednesday!
